Description

This is an original very rare Male Dakshinavarti Shankh from the Indian Ocean. The Male Shankh is characterized by a protruding lip on the surface and is very much rare as compared to the female Dakshinavarti Shankh. The male Shankh is called Panchajanya and is held by the deity Vishnu and His Avatars like Matsya, Kurma, Varaha and Narasimha. Also Lord Krishna is described possessing Panchajanya Shankh. Besides Vishnu, other deities are also pictured holding the shankh. These include the sun god Surya, Indra “? the king of heaven and god of rain and the war god Kartikeya. This Shankh was found in Srilanka and is healthy with a thick body and milky colour and is covered by its natural skin. This Valampuri or Dakshinavarti shankh when held with the spout (siphonal canal) pointed up, has spiral twisting rightwards rather than very much more common form, which twists leftwards. This true Shankh is a rare sinistral Turbinella conch shell from the Indian Ocean, usually from Turbinella pyrum.

This is different from the common right hand whelk shell that is sold under the same name. A real Dakshinavarti Shankh like this, has a rounded shape (that matches the left hand shankh) and has 3 to 7 ridges or plaits on its columella while a whelk shell does not show the presence of such plaits on its columella and is more conical in shape. These can be accurately verified by an x-ray.

A Dakshinavarti Shankh symbolises prosperity, purity and abundance. It is said that this Shankh emits the sound “Om”? naturally in the environment due to its shape when kept with its open mouth facing the sky and tail towards the North.

This Shankh is very rare & much coveted and it is highly auspicious to keep it for prosperity and auspiciousness. This type of Shankh is found 1-2 in number in an year and is found in the Indian Ocean between Myanmar (Burma) all the way to Sri Lanka.
