About Lord Kaal Bhairav | Significance of Kaal Bhairav Puja Vidhanam

Lord Bhairava is one of the fierce incarnations of the Supreme Lord Shiva. The word ‘Bhairava’ originates from the word ‘Bhiru’ which literally translates to ‘Fearsome’. The word Bha in Sanskrit refers to creation, Ra refers to sustenance and Va translates to destruction. Thus, signifying that, Bhairava is the one who creates, sustains and dissolves the three stages of life. Thus, Bhairava means extremely terrible and fearsome. It also means one who removes fear and one who is beyond the concept of fear. Lord Bhairava safeguards His devotees by destroying the desires of greed, anger and lust.
The origin of Lord Bhairava can be traced in Shiva Mahapurana where Lord Brahma and Vishnu were engaged in a heated argument regarding who is the superior Lord and the creator of the universe. Few days past and Lord Brahma’s ego increased. He thought that just like Him even Lord Shiva has five heads and His powers are no less than that of Lord Shivas. Brahma’s ego knew no bound and He started interfering in the work of Lord Shiva. The Lord noticed all this and threw a small hair strand from His head, this hair strand took the form of Lord Bhairav and this form cut off one of Lord Brahma’s head. The Kapala (forehead) of Lord Brahma or His skull was held by Lord Bhairav in His hand and it was at that very moment when Lord Brahma’s Ego was destroyed and He became enlightened and He understood His mistake. Lord Bhairav is said to be the guarding Lord of the Shaktipeeth and this is why there is a temple of Lord Bhairava near to every Shaktipeeth. The child incarnation of Lord Bhairav (Bal Rup) is worshipped as Batuk Bhairav. Lord Bhairav is also known as Kshetrapalaka
