About Maa Katyayani | Significance of Maa Katyayani puja vidh and Katyayani Mata pooja for marriage

Goddess Katyayani is one of the fierce forms of primordial Goddess Durga. In Amarakosha which is a Sanskrit lexicon, ‘Katyayani’ stands to be the second name with which Supreme Adi Parashakti is addressed. Maa Katayayani is also renowned and addressed as Mahishasuramardini as She slayed the demon. This fierce yet kind hearted Goddess is highly revered on the 6th day of Navratri and is one of the nine ‘Navdurga’ goddesses. The first mention of Goddess Katyayani was documented in Yajurveda in the part of Taittiriya Aranyaka. According to this Scripture, She is mentioned to be created out of the combined anger of all of the deities in order to kill the demon Mahishasura.

The story of Maa Katyayani’s birth is very interesting, once there was a renowned sage called Rishi Katyayan who belonged to a great lineage of Rishis (sages) and was a great devotee of Devi Bhagwati (Durga). He underwent eras of rigorous penance to appease the Goddess. When Goddess Bhagwati was pleased by his devotion, he prayed to the Goddess to take birth as his daughter. Goddess Bhagwati accepted and accomplished his wish. So Devi Bhagwati was born in the house of Rishi Katyayan, as his daughter. After some eras, when tyranny of demon Mahisasur crossed the limitation, all deities including Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh requested Devi Durga to end the torment of Mahishashur. Maa Katyayani (manifestation of Durga) took this responsibility. Gods and Demi Gods of the celestial world equipped Maa Katyayani with the best weapons, like, Mahadev gave Her the Trishul, Lord Vishnu the Sudarshan Chakra etc. A war raged between the terrible Demon Mahisasur and Maa Katyayani. The deceptive Mahisasur was finally defeated and killed by Maa Katyayani. Being the daughter of her great devotee Rishi Katyayan, the Divine Mother came to be prominently known as ‘Katyayini’. Maa Katyayani is worshipped as Maa Durga in West Bengal, Orissa and some other parts of India.

According to Her iconography, Maa Katyayani is imagined as wearing Pink Saree and White Rosary adorning Her neck. She is depicted having three eyes, eighteen arms, long black hair. She holds a trident which was given to Her by Lord Shiva, a Sudarshan Chakra which was given to Her by Lord Vishnu, A conch Shell by Lord Varuna, a dart by Lord Agni, a bow by Lord Vayu, a bunch of arrows by Lord Surya and a thunderbolt by Lord Indra. She is also seen holding a mace which was given to Her by Lord Kubera, a rosary and waterpot by Lord Brahma, a sword and a shield by Lord Kala, an axe used in battle by Lord Vishwakarma and other weapons. She is seen mounted on a Lion.

In Yoga vidya and Tantra Vidya, Maa Katyayani rules the Ajna Chakra or the Third Eye Chakra. The meaning of Ajna is ‘perception’, but also to ‘become aware of’ and ‘control’. The Third Eye Chakra is associated with psychic abilities, clairvoyance, the power of thought, imagination, seeing on all levels and intuition. The function of this Chakra is aptly described by its Sanskrit name Ajna, meaning command. Planet Saturn is ruled by Maa Katyayani.
