About Maha Rudra | Significance of Maha Rudra Pooja

One of the fiercest forms of Lord Shiva is the Rudra avatar. Lord Shiva has eleven forms of Rudra and in Maha Rudra Puja all the eleven Rudras are worshipped. One of the most significant and potent Vedic hymns mentioned in Yajur Veda is dedicated to Lord Rudra. The hymns are known as Sri Rudram and Chamakam. In order to venerate Lord Rudra and to attain His divine blessings the Maha Rudra Pooja is performed. The Maha Rudra Yagna begins by performing Aavahan (welcoming of the deity), Sthapna (giving the seat to the deity) Laghu-Nyasam and Rudra Trishati is recited. Maha Rudra Puja and Havan are considered as the most powerful and beneficial Puja dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the Maha Rudra Pooja various attributes and names of Lord Shiva are chanted through Sri Rudram Namakam Chamakam. This represents the Ying – Yang nature of Shiva’s existence symbolizing the balance that is in nature and the cosmos around us.

When we chant Sri Rudram everyday it is called as “Roopam”. When the Namakam is recited 11 times followed by one recitation of Chamakam it is known as “Ekadasa Rudram”. When Ekadasa Rudram are recited 11 times, it is known as one Laghu Rudram and when Laghu Rudra chants are recited eleven times, they make one ‘Maha Rudram’.

Rudram consists of five major parts:

  • Ganpati Atharvashirsha
  • Anganyas
  • Panchamrut Snanam
  • Namakam
  • Chamakam

It ends with recitation of Purush Sukta and Durga Sukta.

The objective of Maha Rudram is to chant the most powerful prayers dedicated to Lord Shiva. These sacred prayers are recited for removal of all malefic and difficulties and for all round benefits along with absolution of all sins. Comprising 11 sacred segments called Anuvakas, each Anuvakas praises His various accomplishments and attributes and invoke His boundless benevolence. Chamakam are sacred hymns, which furnish the happiness of highest order and fulfil all desires. By the power of Rudram, sick become well, the unmarried find ideal mates, debts are removed, wealth & power is showered and death is evaded. The power available during the performance of this yajna is of such a high magnitude that Yogis and Tantriks activate mantras and become recipients of great magical occult secrets.

Keivalyo Upanishad says: “Namakam Chamakam Hotran, Purush-suktam Japet Sada, Pravishet Sa Mahadeva Graham Grahapatiryatha”

Translation: By Namak Chamak Mantras (used in Atirudra) the person enters the abode of Lord Shiva without any fear and with certainty.
