About Nav Durga Goddesses | Significance of Nav Durga Puja

Maa Durga manifested in nine different forms to kill the most fierce and strong demon named ‘Mahishasura’. These divine nine forms of Maa Durga are collectively addressed as ‘Navdurga’. In the Shaktism sect of Hinduism, these nine forms of Durga are revered as one Goddess. In order to celebrate the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahisasura in all Her nine forms and to revere the Supreme feminine energy that encompasses the qualities of being powerful, beautiful, ferocious, calm, compassionate, fearless, and strong, the festival of Navratri is celebrated for nine days and nights across the country with great fervor. The three major forms in which Goddess Durga manifested herself, namely, Maha Saraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakaali are the active energies (Shakti) of Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra respectively. These three forms of Durga further manifested in three more forms each, and thus emerged the nine forms of Durga, which are collectively called Navadurga or Nine Durgas. All the Nava (Nine) Durgas hold unique set of qualities, powers, and strengths and each of them blesses the devotees abundantly. Their names are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidhatri.
