Sampoorna Shradh Ritual for the deceased

Description

Once antim samskara is performed, Garud Puran Path is performed for 8 days in the evening time.

On the 5th or 7th day Shaiya daan is performed. Daan or donation of articles as per one’s ability is done to a Brahmin. The Daan will consist of umbrella, torch, footwear, comb, mirror, soap, clothes, hair oil, cooking utensils, bed, bedding, food articles (grains, sesame seeds, ghee, rice, Jaggery, salt, coconut), silver, gold, cow and articles which were favorite of the deceased person.

On the 11th day, Panchagavya Homa is performed. Panchagavya Homa is considered one of the most auspicious Homas for peace and prosperity. Panchagavya is a mixture of five ingredients which are obtained from a cow, the ingredients being cow-milk, cow-curd, cow-ghee, cow-urine and cow-dung. These rituals help the deceased to attain a peaceful transmigration of the soul and tide over the difficult times for the family members left behind.

On the 12th day Sapinidikarana Shraddha rituals are done. The ritual symbolizes acceptance of the deceased person’s soul as a Pitr or forefather and entry in the Pitrlok. Sapinidikarana literally means coming-together or grouping-together. As per Garud Puran on the 12th day the subtle body which is also called Preta-body enters the world of ancestors and is accepted as a pitr. The ritual helps the soul make the transition with peace and ease.

On the 13th day Teravi Puja and Brahmin Bhoj are conducted. This day marks the completion of the soul’s journey from Bhu-loka to Pret-loka to Pitra-loka. The day and the rituals on the day symbolize the end of the mourning period. The day symbolizes cutting-off of all ties of the soul with the earthly life he or she had lived. On the day all the near and dear ones and Brahmins are invited and fed a meal of simple satvik food along with sweets. Then, Navagraha Shanti Yagna is performed for the wellbeing of the deceased and the family.
