About Sunderkand Paath | Significance of Sampoorna Sunderkand Paath

Sunderkand (Sunder-kand) also known as Sundara Kanda which translates to ‘beautiful chapter’is a sub section of Akhand Ramayan written by Sage Valmiki which comprises of 7 Kands or Chapters. Lord Hanuman’s mother, Maa Anjani fondly addressed Shri Hanuman as ‘Sundara’ which literally translates to ‘the charming one’. Sunderkand Paath was composed by Valmiki in Sanskrit language and is the fifth Kand (chapter) of the epic Ramayana. This beautiful chapter is completely dedicated Lord Hanuman and speaks highly about His Bhakti towards Lord Ram in a detailed manner. It also highlights Lord Hanuman’s journey to Ravana’s Lanka in search of Maa Sita and lists innumerous attributes of Lord Hanuman which are worth aspiring.

Reciting Sundarkand is considered as one of the best methods to worship and revere Lord Hanuman. Sundarkand consists of 3 Shlokas, 6 Chhands, 60 Dohe and 526 Chaupais which are various poetry meters in Vedic Literature. In the beginning of Sunderkand Paath Jamwant reminds Lord Hanuman about his powers (which Lord Hanuman had forgotten due to a curse). Later it details Lord Hanuman’s journey and deeds in Lanka, his knowledge, wisdom, power, his dedication and love for Lord Ram and Maa Sita and much more. Lord Hanuman is one of the nine chiranjeevis (immortals) in Sanathan Dharma.
