Description
Lord Vitthal, also known as Vithoba or Vithal or Vitthala is worshipped mainly in the state of Maharashtra as a manifestation of Lord Vishnu or Krishna by His devotees. Lord Vithala is often depicted as a dark young boy standing in an arms akimbo posture often accompanied by His consort Rakhumai. Lord Vithal is worshipped by all but primarily by devotees and followers of Varkari faith. The primary temple of Lord Vithal is in Pandharpur. Legend goes that Pundalik, a devotee of Lord Vitthal was instrumental in bring the Lord to Pandharpur and protecting the poets and saints of varkari faith. Devotees of Lord Vithal follow the Bhakti marg or tradition and worship Him by singing bhajans and hymns in His praise. Lord Vitthal is also known as Pandurang meaning white in color, although His idol is dark complexioned. It is so as it is believed that to a true devotee His idol appears white.
