Nags or Snakes have a very special significance in Hindu Vedas and mythology and they are considered divine. There are many legends associated with Nag Panchami, the first being that the festival is celebrated to honor serpents (snakes and Nags), who are directly related to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Lord Vishnu Himself sleeps on Shisha and Shisha is His resting place, Lord Shiva always keeps Vasuki snake on his neck. The Vasuki snake had played a very important role during Samundra Manthan when he was used as rope by Devatas and Danavas to churn the ocean. The snakes (Naga) are the rulers of Pataalloka (underworld) and sons of Kashyapa, Brahma’s son. The other legend is that on this day Lord Krishna as a young boy subdued Kaliya, the 1000 hooded serpent.
The names of the 9 Naag Devatas are – Anant, Vasuki, Shesh, Padmanabh, Kambal, Shankhapal, Dhrutrashtra, Takshak and Kalia if prayed daily in the morning will keep one protected from all evils and helps to become victorious in life.
On Nag Panchami by fasting and worshipping Nag Devta one’s desires and ambitions are fulfilled. Nags are also worshipped to seek protection from snake bites and all other evils. Snakes are loved and blessed by Lord Shiva and worshiping them on Nag Panchami also reduces malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Dosha. During this time digging of earth is avoided thus ploughing of field, digging from foundation is considered inauspicious.
Nag Panchami Puja will be conducted on the auspicious day of Nag Panchami with chanting of Nag Mantra to invoke the blessings of Nag Devta for health, wealth, success and prosperity, peace and protection. The worship of Snakes on this auspicious day bestows the devotee with charisma and courage to face all challenges in the life and lead a successful life, removes Kaal Sarp Dosha from the devotees life, removes Vastu Doshas, grants protection from black magic, negativity or Nazar Dosha and gives good health and disease free life.

Meaning: May all Nags whether on Earth, Sky, Swarga, in the Sun rays, Sarovaras or lakes, wells or other water bodies, be appeased as we greet these deities again and again.
