Purpose of Kali Puja in Kolkata
The Kalighat Temple in Kolkata is dedicated to Maa Kali. Goddesses Kali represents the fierce aspect of Mother Divine and is primarily worshipped for protection, power, knowledge, victory and success. The Kalighat Kali temple is one of the 52 Shakti Peethas, it is the where the toes of the right foot of Maa Sati fell during Shiva’s Rudra Tandava. The temple dates back to 16th century but the current structure was constructed 200 years ago. The Kalighat Kali Temple is located on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga. Significance of the temple is mentioned in various ancient literary work such as Mansar Bhasan and Kavi Kankan Chandi.
