Tripindi Shradh, also known as Kamya Shradh, is conducted for all known and unknown ancestors who have been imprisoned in one of the three realms (Patala Loka, Bhu Loka, or Antarikh Loka) for different causes. The causes may be due to uncontrollable cravings of the souls, karmic obligations of the souls, premature death, or souls who did not get Shradh puja for three consecutive years and did not complete it in Gaya, the holy city. There are three kinds of debts recognized in Indian Hindu tradition. These are Pitru runa (Debt of the Forefathers), Rushi runa (Debt of the Saints), and Parmatma runa (Debt of God). Parmatma Runa’s alleviation is obtained by doing pooja (worship) and fasting, as prescribed by our dharma shastras. The person is relieved of Pitru Runa by doing shraddha, Pitru pujan, and other rituals. Brahmins are required to do various types of Yajna, Shraddha, Tarpan, and so on.
This puja comprises of rites that aid in the cleansing of all sins, allowing the departed spirits to rest in peace. During the Tripindi Shradha Puja, the practice of giving ‘Pind’ or Pind Daan to the ancestors liberates the spirits of the ancestors, pushing them to their onward journey and immensely benefits the person. In this puja, three pindas of barley, rice, and sesame seed flour are prepared and put on darbha grass on the flour. They are given to souls via the means of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, who represent the Rajo, Sat, and Tamo Gunas.
This puja is done to liberate oneself of ancestral promises and curses. It is performed for all known and unknown ancestors from one’s father’s side, mother’s side, and, if married, from his wife’s maternal side who are trapped in one of the three realms. This puja is performed once in lifetime.

Meaning: May all ancestors find peace. May the divine Mother Earth, prakriti find peace. May we heal so that we may take mindful steps. May we all remember to always remember where we came from. May we always be respectful to our roots.

Please mention the names of ancestors (if known) from father’s side, mother’s side, and, if married, from wife’s maternal side. The priests will include all unknown ancestors in the sankalpa. This is an individual puja done in your name. You will be provided with the contact no. of the priest, to call during the Sankalpa/Puja.
Since this is a Puja for the departed soul, photos and prasad are not sent.
