Description

Ann means food and Daan means donation, thus donation of food to poor and needy is known as Ann Daan. In scriptures Ann Daan is glorified as Shrestha Daan or the best donation. It is said that as you give, so shall you receive thus by donating food to any needy person, it is believed that there will never be a shortage of food in one’s life. In scriptures it is mentioned that donating uncooked food grains gives more virtue than donating cooked food. Also one should never donate stale or food which has gone bad. Adi Sankaracharya in his stothram praising Annapurna has mentioned that donating grains to needy and deserving people is more virtuous than donating gold or elephants. It is believed that in Kali Yug donating Anna pleases Lord Krishna and is the best method to render service to Him.

About Ann Daan | Significance of Ann Daan

Ann Daan is donation of food grains. Often a term is frequently used which is ‘Anna Daanam Maha Daanam’ meaning donation of food is the biggest and the best donation gift in the world. Often in Hindu culture elders advice on donating food to the poor and needy, instead of donating money. Giving is what the universe teaches us every day. Sun gives its light, flowers their fragrance, tree its fruits, river its water. Despite this, neither the sunlight decreased, nor the fragrance of the flowers, nor the fruits of the trees decreased, nor the water of the rivers. Therefore, if you give charity with one hand, after returning with many hands, it will come back to us. During Ann Daan, a team from Rudra Centre Puja Services will deliver the chosen amount of grains to an orphanage or an old-age home for their usage.
