Description

In Sanatan Dharma, Cow or Gau is regarded as Gau-mata or mother. Gau-seva or serving a cow is considered as one of the most pious things and at contrary, Gau-hatya or killing of a cow is considered as the most heinous of all sins that a man can commit in Vedic scriptures.

It is believed that in the house where the first roti is fed to the cow every morning, happiness and prosperity resides there. Gau daan or donation of a cow to a poor Brahmin is considered as one of the best donations. Scriptures prescribe that every person should do Gau daan at least once in their lifetime. Gausat Daan means donating 100 cows. Since ancient times kings and royalties used to do Gausat Daan to ensure that their name and fame widely spread.

Gausat Daan is considered as one of the most pious and noble of all Daans which one may undertake. It washes away all the sins, karmas and samskaras from the past lives and it ensues Punya (fruits of past good karmas) for the entire family.

A ceremony takes place for this donation, which includes the donation of ropes, buckets, shawls, gold and silver symbolic gifts, and clothes. Puja is conducted according to ancient Vedic scriptures throughout this ritual. In this puja, Go mantra is chanted 21,000 times during the puja ceremony on behalf of the donor and it is believed that by doing this, Lakshmi is attracted (prosperity and good fortune) for the donor and his family.
