  • The first Nadi is known as the ‘Aadi Nadi’ and it represents the element of Vaata (air). The flow of energy from feet to head which means in upward direction is represented by the Aadi Nadi.
  • The second Nadi is known as ‘Madhya Nadi’ and it represents the element of Pitta (fire). The flow of energy from head to feet and vice versa is represented by the Madhya Nadi.
  • The third Nadi is known as the Antya Nadi and it represents the element of ‘Kapha’ (water). The flow of energy from head to feet is represented by the Antya Nadi.
In Vedic Astrology, the 27 Nakshatras or constellations which are reflected in the Kundali or Horoscope are divided into 3 groups of Nadis namely – Adi Nadi, Madhya Nadi, Antya Nadi or Antar Nadi. Depending on the Date and Time of birth of a person, the native’s Birth Star is divided into the 3 Nadis. Each individual has a different Nadis, as per their Horoscope.

Nadi Dosh Meaning, Effects, Nadi Dosha Remedies

It is a common practice amongst Hindus to match the Horoscope/birth-charts or Kundali/Kundli of the man and woman who are supposed to get married, to check how compatible they are, through Vedic Astrology. This matching of the compatibility of Kundali is done by matching 36 points or Gunas or qualities, out of which the aspect of Nadi Koota matching has been given 8 points/Gunas or Ashtakoota. In simpler words, the natal chart of every individual comprises of 8 different categories which are known as Kootas. The Nadi (pulse) is one of the 8th Kootas, that is studied before a marriage proposal is accepted and the marriage date is fixed. The natal charts of both the prospects (man and woman) are analyzed and the gunas are compared to understand whether the prospects could be a perfect match for marriage or would not be compatible.
Listed below is the table that specifies the points assigned to each category of the Ashtakoota

    Ashtakoota Points
    Varna 1
    Vaishya 2
    Tara 3
    Yoni 4
    Maitri 5
    Gan 6
    Bhukut 7
    Nadi 8
    Total Points 36

Amongst all the eight Kootas, the Nadi koota has been assigned 8 points which is the maximum points given to any of these eight kootas of Kundli Milan.

    Scientific Reason of Nadi Dosha

Just like in the science of Ayurveda the pulse is read to check what is the physical ailment, so too in Vedic Astrology. The Nadis are compared and each of the 3 Nadis is related to that of the elements of Ayurvedic science of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha as mentioned above. Ayurveda says if any of the three elements in excess in the body then the person should not have any food which will increase that particular element. Similarly, Nadi Dosh means if a person belongs to a certain Nakshatra under a particular Nadi type, then he/she should not get married to anyone whose Nakshatra is under the same Nadi type as nature will be same. Marriages are supposed to establish balance in nature or energies of two people if both are aggressive in nature or too meek in nature then there will be no balance. It is recommended to get a Nadi Dosha check before getting married.

Division of 27 Nakshatras into the 3 Nadi Types

The 27 Nakshatras or constellations as per Astrology are divided into the 3 Nadi groups and there are 9 Nakshatras in each type of Nadi.

    1) ADI NADI or Vata/Vaat – Ashwini, Aardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada.

The nature is dry and cold because it is controlled by Vata/Vaat which is Wind.

Energetically Adi Nadi represents the Pingla Nadi.

    2) MADHYA NADI or Pitta/Pitt – Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushyami, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Poorvaashadha, Dhanistha, Uttara Bhadrapada.

It is the nature of Pitta or Bile, the acidic nature. Energetically it represents Sushumna Nadi.

    3) ANTYA NADI or Kapha – Kritika, Rohini, Aaslesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttaraashadha, Shravani, RevatiThe nature is oily and courteous as controlled by Kapha which is Phlegm. Energetically it represents the Ida Nadi.

Kundli Milan is checking and analyzing the mental, physical and financial compatibilities of the two proposed partners for marriage. Generally, for a happy and prosperous married life, the Nadi of both must be different.

This is done in order to know whether the individuals could lead a happy marital life and whether they could be compatible. Various aspects ranging from planetary positioning, doshas, yogas and Nadis are studied. According to Vedic Astrology, if a couple has the same Nadi, according to their individual natal charts than the couple is said to suffer from ‘Nadi Dosha’. This dosha is said to create number of problems and hurdles in the life of the couple. The Nadi Dosha is said to create misunderstandings, there would be problems in conceiving, and even if the couple with a Nadi Dosha is blessed with a child, it is said that the child and the following generation will be weaker in health. Nadi Dosha can also lead to lack of interest or sexual attraction between the two individuals.

The objective of performing the Nadi Dosh Nivaran Puja is to lead a harmonious and prosperous married life. Furthermore, performing the Nadi Dosh Nivaran Puja resolves all the hurdles that create problems in the marriage. It helps to offer relief from the troubles created by this dosha. There are few other methods that help in offering relief from this dosha, but the best of all the remedies is performing the Nadi Dosh Nivaran Puja.

Usually, this puja is performed before marriage however one can also perform this puja after marriage to resolve all issues. Nadi Dosh doesn’t belong to any one Natal Chart it is between 2 charts of husband and wife

    Different Nadi Dosh Effects

Adi Nadi Dosh – If both are from Adi Nadi Nakshatras the man dominates. Lack of dedication and focus.
Madhya Nadi Dosha – The couple drifts away from each other. Prone to dominating and controlling each other. Quarrels are constant. May get divorced. Chances of not having a child, miscarriage, and abortion.
Antya Nadi Dosh – In this case the woman dominates. Misunderstandings and disharmony between the couple.
Naga Nadi Dosha – is a Dosha caused when the Birth Nakshatra is in the same Nadi of the man and woman.

    Nadi Dosha Cancellation

Astrologically there are Nadi Dosha exceptions that cancel the effects of the same Nadi Dosh.
In case the boy and girl are of the same Nakshatra and the same Rashi or Moon sign, it leads to the cancellation of Nadi Dosha.
If Nakshatra of both (girl and the boy) are the same but their Rashis are different then boy and girl of same Nadi can marry. However, the Charan should not be the same and the birth Rashi and birth Charan of the girl should not be before that of the boy.
In case the birth Rashi of boy and girl are same but Nakshatras are different then it is a Nadi Dosha exception and results in Nadi Dosha cancellation. The condition is that Nakshatra of the girl should not be before the Nakshatra of the boy.
Even if both are the same Nadi but if the Rashi Lord is Jupiter, Venus or Mercury then it results in Nadi Dosh cancellation.
