This sleeping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi idol is extremely auspicious and powerful, having been skillfully sculpted in Laxmi Narayan Shaligram Shila. The Shaligram Shila represents Lord Vishnu and is a self-manifested stone. This Laxmi Narayan Shaligram has a cavity and spiral impressions, which signify the combined energies of Goddess Laxmi and Narayan (Vishnuji) together. The spiral markings are called a “chakra,” as it is considered the Sudarshan Chakra (discus weapon) of Vishnuji. The Lord Vishnu along with Lord Brahma and Mahesh and is one of the divine Trinity and regarded as the preserver and protector of the Universe. Goddess Laxmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and the Goddess of material and spiritual wealth, good fortune and abundance. This idol depicts Lord Vishnu lying down on the coiled Snake, Sheshnag, while Goddess Laxmi is sitting at His feet, massaging His legs. A Lotus emerges from Lord Vishnu’s navel, with Lord Brahma sitting on it. The fanned hood of the multi-headed Sheshnag spreads over the divine Lord’s head like an umbrella. All the aspects of this idol are carved in neat detail. The four arms of Lord Vishnu are holding the Gada (mace), the Sudarshan Chakra, the Shankh and in His left lower hand, which is resting casually on His hips, He is holding a Lotus. This divine portrayal of sleeping Vishnu and Laxmi is a popular image. As described in the Puranas, Lord Vishnu is said to rest on His snake Sheshnag’s coiled body in the celestial ocean of milk, Kshirsagar. His consort, Goddess Laxmi, sits at His feet, serving Him. Lord Brahma, the creator of the Universe, is believed to have been manifested by Lord Vishnu, as per some ancient texts.
